Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year. I am very excited and enthusiastic to start this school year. This year the Saint Paul School District adopted a wonderful new High School Physical Science Curriculum. The textbook title is Physical Science with Earth Science, published by McGraw-Hill/Glencoe, 2009. This new curriculum has an updated textbook, an interactive website, and some animation to help students build on classroom knowledge.
Physical Science is a two-credit course designed to meet high school requirements, and to develop your sense of confidence with science and technology. Physical Science covers basic high school physics and chemistry concepts with a small amount of mathematics. The major concepts covered in this class include the history and nature of science, atomic structure, chemical reactions, and types of energy transformations, forces and motion. We’ll investigate various problems and study current issues through laboratory activities, scientific inquiry, projects and independent work. You are expected to study and complete assignments on a regular basis.
Your attendance is essential to learning! You are part of the classroom, and your presence is expected every school day. It is impossible to pass this class if you are frequently absent. Missed work must be made up ASAP. If you are absent for medical leave make sure you work with your homebound teacher. STAY CURRENT WITH YOUR WORK!! DON’T FALL BEHIND; it takes the fun out of this classL.
Laboratory:
The lab is the most important part of this class. The experiments promote a deeper understanding of science through the collection and analysis of information. You are expected to follow laboratory safety rules. Labs are not graded by “getting the right answer”, but to format the report in a scientific way and to give a logical conclusion based on the information you collect. I expect you to do your best! J
Science Fair:
As an overall comprehensive laboratory final you will be required to complete a science fair project.
